Hi Mark and All,
I don't think they ever solved this until the 90/110 models ( steering box
on the chassis). Check most any Series Rover and watch it wiggle. Worse once
you take them apart and reassemble IMHO. Some Rovers have a brace from the
bulkhead to the support not holding the steering box. I had so much trouble
on an S11a that I made one to fit the steering box side too, since it
happened to have the extra bracket welded to the bulkhead. Most Rovers only have
the one for the type of vehicle it is destined for RHD or LHD.
I have seen some that have the welded bracket but no diagonal brace!
More diagonal bracing, the support made of a "boxed" section upright, long
rods to the rad support like big trucks do here, who knows.
This sort of problem exist on lots of cars. You often see bracing for the
strut towers on FWD vehicles and there may be an "accessory" ( aftermarket)
for an "export model" strut brace where the vehicles don't have the luxury of
the smooth roads we use. Read into that what you will, some countries don't
have a stitch of pavement. And of course racing apps.
We have the problem where the engine is in the way and not much room for
"bridgework".
