Paul,

There is only one way to mount this sort of tyre. They used to be called
"Unidirectional Trakgrips" meaning they could only be fitted one way. 

The point of the V faces the front at the top of the tyre.

This allows loose mud to be cleared to the side. If the tyre is fitted the
other way then the loose material is collected under the tyre and spoils the
grip. - Look at any Tractor to see modern similar tyres.
