The lever, pivot type of selector was used on the later Series 1's (86" and
107" etc) and onto series 2 etc. It allows the use of the middle seat and
removes the need for the hinged cover for access to the selector knob.
Provided you have an original style gearbox/transfer case the PTO drive
fittings will fit, although a rear drive shaft will need shortening. It
will obstruct use of an overdrive should you desire one.
The grey matter can't remember my post S1 and pre Rangie tunnel covers.
Cheers

Subject: SER1 Slightly OT: gearbox designs
Hi All,
Two questions - one hopefully easier to answer than the other :-)
Firstly, can a PTO from a later series land rover be fitted to a series
one (1953 80") gearbox. I've just bought one for a bargin price, but I
noticed that the control lever is rather different. This in itself is
not an issue ( I can make a suitable series one looking one) but I'm
concerned that other parts may also not fit.
Secondly and a bit OT ,
On my series 3 (late ex mil 109 FFR) the gear box tunnel cover has a
large rubber bund, under which you would expect the gearbox oil filler
to be (as on a series one), however this hole is blanked off and the
correct way to fill is from underneath through the top level/filler
plug (according to the owners handbook etc.)
Does anyone know why this, seemingly retrograde step was taken - having
just donw an oil change on my series one, and thought I'd do the series
3 at the same time, it brought home how much more awkward the later
gearboxes are to change the oil in.
Thanks for any insight
Jon
