When I re-built my '49, I had a similar problem.
I contacted the British Heritage Trust and Land Rover Traceability. From
this, I know that R.061.00082 was produced from 21/8/49 to 9/9/49,then
shipped to Rossleigh Ltd, Edinburgh. Rossleigh ceased to be a company
many years ago (though the name has recently been resurected), so that
was a dead-end.
Edinburgh Council have documentation that show that SY 9255 (no vehicle
description is listed, there are just 5 hand-written columns in small
ledgers) was sold by Adam Purves (Galashiels) to Douglas M. Ramsay (also
Galashiels) on 16/8/50. Although the date looks odd, the registrations
on the same page are all from August `49, which implies that the vehicle
spent almost a year on forecourts, before finding a buyer.
I MOT'd and insured the vehicle on it's chassis number, then made an
appointment with my local Vehicle Licencing office, who inspected the
paperwork, cast an eye over the vehicle (basically ensuring the the
paperwork matched the vehicle, and then gave me a registration number.
I was lucky: my number had not been bought by someone else, and the guy
was feeling generous. I happened to have a couple of pictures of the
vehicle in it's pre-restoration state (and still in the back garden it
was recovered from), which also showed a matching registration plate...
so I was given the original '49 number for the vehicle
