Hi,
If you don't know the original number you'll need to first write to
land rover traceability to find out when your land rover was built and
despatched. If you are lucky that may have been to a garage that is
still going which has records (unlikely). If you are lucky the local
records office for the region in which it was first sold to will still
have the old (pre dvla) vehicle records. Most will (for a small fee)
copy out the page from the register for the day it was first registered
(you may need get a few days either side unless they are prepared to
check against the chassis number)
If like me, you are unlucky, it will have been sold via a dealer in
Birmingham. Birmingham records office decided to dispose of all except
a very small number of vehicle records so tracing any Birmingham
registrations can be tricky..
Like others have suggested - the best person to talk to is Michel
Burns. Write to him with photos of the complete vehicle (front, side
and rear) and take a rubbing of the bulkhead plate as well. Enclose a
SAE envelope ! If you still have the original number plate make sure
that it's on the vehicle when you take pictures, and try to enclose a
pre restoration photo of the vehicle with the number plate.
