Dunsfold are really amazingly good, aren't they? I'm really kicking
myself for buying so many bits from Craddock.
I've been having real trouble getting hold of steering bits -
including a new box - for my 88. Craddock have already sent me the
wrong one, so I spent all afternoon explaining the difference between
the worm and nut and recirculating ball versions and how the
conversion kit wasn't right after all because the external fittings
were still those of the earlier version. as you will all probably
know, I am the last person who should be explaining how the steering
on a land rover works, but anyway all i ever got was a blank - and
usually quite surly - 'not available'. same for the tracking rod, oddly.
Dunsfold, on the other hand, were a model of friendly helpfulness.
The series two box is exactly the same, they said, except that the
mounting holes might need boring and tapping to take a slightly
larger bolt, and yes they had a reconditioned MOD unit just there,
and here's a second-hand tracking rod that'll do just fine, and would
I like them to fit the ball joints? i didn't have to read out a
single part number, and he knew enough to reassure me that yes, the
drop-arm connection was threaded, without even referring to the parts
book.
also I think today marks the day that I've officially spent more on
parts - never mind my time - than the largest amount of money I could
possibly sell the land rover for once it was completely working. Is
there a name for this milestone? I shall go and drink to it, anyway.
thanks for your help, btw.
