A2 has a more complex structure but a vastly improved internal path. Per 
request the process touches a lot less code, and the code it does 
execute was specially tweaked based on what they always wanted to do 
with A1 but couldn't.

More to the real point, it is better designed to hand off major tasks to 
modules like mod_perl and does a better job of wrapping their output too.

... all that said, still...

Unless they are doing a site for the H&R Block at tax-time or for a 
real-time World-cup soccer site as the tourney heats up I doubt a normal 
human would ever know which one was running by performance numbers. 
Optimizing up front is a great way to waste time, it is poor programming 
practice. The only real reason I know of to go Apache2 right now is 
mod_deflate ... easy bandwidth savings are worth the one time extra 
effort to get over the mod_perl2 hump.
