  While I agree recompling Perl will help, you might also look into 
  whether or not SELinux is slowing you down.  Also, you might try
  disabling IPv6 on the Core 3 boxes as I've found this can improve
  the network performance:

  This link is specifically for a problem with Mozilla, but it works
  for this generic case as well.

  I would also suggest double checking your config to make sure the 
  Core 3 boxes aren't running any unnecessary services that your
  Core 1 boxes aren't running.
