In the UK Wickes (Building supply) do a paste called Potable Water Sealing  
Compound. This is smeared on the male thread in the same manner as PTFE except  
you don't have to remember whether or not to wrap it anti-clockwise or  
clockwise.
Re the oil filter - I have a photo of the LRSOC spin on filter fitted to my  
2L engine. I shall post it onto the garage when I can find it.
