Mark,

Boss White hardens over time. It is fine for a few years but eventually
(especially on really hot pipes) sets hard. I suspect that other similar
products will behave the same. 

PTFE Tape is stable for ages - If it disintegrates or does not work then at
least you can get the parts apart and re-do the joint. 

On mine I cleaned the female thread with a tap and then used PTFE - it
worked fine.

Shouldn't you be using Boss White and Hemp to re seal the heater
connections to keep the vehicle more original.......

Some years ago my heater valve was leaking a bit from the connections
and I 
redid it using PTFE tape, since when it's been fine. Pretty basic
plumbing 
along the lines of central heating, so no reason why that shouldn't
work fine !
