    Hi Diana,
Welcome to the list, good to see yet another down under lister. Are
you a member of the Land Rover Owners Club of Australia NSW Branch?
There is a quite active Series I "group" in that club.
As far as your parts queries go, I would suggest Cox & Turner in the
UK for the +.060" rings although, from memory I have only seen them list
+.040" they should be able to help you out with the big ends, mains and
little end stuff.
Look carefully at the camshaft and rocker shafts as these items wear
in the 1600 engines and are responsible for most of the rattles C&T can
supply rocker shafts etc. Wade Cams in Melbourne can reprofile your
camshaft although there must be somebody in Sydney who still has the
data to do it.
It is probable that the setup you have for the rear main is non
standard. The rear main seal scroll and retainer should be obtainable
from Dunsfold Land Rover http://www.dunsfold.com/ They are good to deal
with and have heaps of ex-military Seriues I spares. Failing that, just
salvage one from a dead 1600 engine. Try Walter Cavatano in Cooma if you
get stuck.
On the point of water getting into the oil via the rear main seal,
that is why the wading plug was fitted and should be used.
Another hint, if you buy stuff in the UK, make sure that you get the
supplier to post your parts by AIR MAIL. Getting stuff sent here by
couriers, air express etc. will cause grief one way or another. As an
example, I had a phone call from a courier who claimed to have tried to
deliver a parcel twice (to my home address during the day of course) and
then expected me to pick it up from their depot in Sydney. Told him to
sent the package back to the UK and re-ordered the parts to be sent by
AIR MAIL.
Feel free to contact me off list if you require advice or further
contacts in Sydney, I will be down there Friday for the day.
        Hope this helps,
    Cheers
