Hi Wren,
 
Just to add another response to your queries, I would say that:
 
a) the overdrive should be reliable
b) the engine should pull it ok other than on inclines - mine is ok even  
when towing on the flat
c) mine (fitted a few months ago) is noisier with some whine, although  
curiously this is diminishing as mileage increases
d) overall I would say it is well worthwhile, partic. if you can drop on a  
good s/hand unit
