Hi Wren
As Tom said there are no mountains in the Fens (an area of the UK that is -5
to 20m above sea level). My S1 lives there too but it has made several
journeys over the Pyrennees and through the Picos de Europa (Spain) and the Fairey
overdrive I have has made a significant difference when hill climbing as it
enables you to get just a little extra out of those revs before dropping down
the box. Also on motorway cruising the advantage is there as that extra 5mph
over 1000 miles means a lot on the time scale.
I have a 1954 2L petrol which has done 15,000 miles and so it is powerfull
enough. I used to have a 1956 2L petrol that had done 90,000 and even though
that was a bit knackered the overdrive still boosted performance.
As an example I have, over a 3 week, 2,500 mile trip using motorways,
byroads and some very dodgy mountain roads, returned a 21mpg average fuel
consumption. For a 1956 88" on 600x16 Avon Traction mileage and FWH I think that is
quite respectable.
So my advice is fit an overdrive - it will only take ten years to pay for
itself!
