I used to have an 86" 2ltr with standard gearing and 750 fitted, this was
pretty good over distances and made every gear a bit longer. the 2ltr was
very happy with this set up. The only compromise was the turning circle.
I now have an 86" with a rather tired 2.25 fitted, this has 205's but has
an overdrive. The overdrive is great as it does give you plenty of options
but you aren't supposed to use it in 1st and 2nd, as a result the first two
gears are very short shifts this is a bit awkward in traffic. I don't have
any hills here in the fens but I know in a head wind I have to take it out
of OD to make progress. However if my engine was in better condition It
would pull fine and I've no doubt that the 2ltr in good condition would
cope easily.
The other option of course is to fit range rover diffs to bring the gearing
up, This is cheaper than an Overdrive but there is NO option of splitting
the gears so you'd have to be sure the engine was up to it.
The was a higher ratio transfer case that was sold I don't know if you can
get them any more. There was one on Ebay, I think you used most of the
gearing from your old transfer box and put it in the new casing with
exception of the final drive or something like that. Anyway I this it
offered higher gearing in the high range but the low range kept the same
ratios.
Can you borrow a set of 750's to see how she runs with them?
