  The Snowy Mountains Scheme is recognised as one of the great engineering
feats of the world. It took 25 years to build and is one of the largest and
most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in operation.

  Built at a cost of $1 billion - including interest costs accrued during
construction - the Scheme was completed on time and under budget in 1974.

  ... undr budget and on time  , I havent heard that combination in a
looooong time ..



  Hope this helps with wondering why they needed so many Landrovers plus
other vehicles

  I had seen the scheme mentioned in an old Land Rover road test , just
wasnt aware of the scope of the project.
