Murray,
I had this exact same problem a few years ago, and it turned out to be  that one of
the three springs in the syncro hub had turned around, so that only two of the
springs were pushing, thus putting the syncro out of alignment.  Even with the
engine turned off, you could not select 3rd or 4th gears. You should easily be able
to check this with the top of the gearbox off.   If you put the transfer case in
neutral, you should be able to turn the syncro hub around so that you can check all
three springs.  From memory the lie under the selector dog, and look like a flat
strip of metal that been bent in the middle if that makes sense.
