The biggest problem with real emery is the fact that the emery "crystals"
break off and embed itself in the copper, which leads to accellerated brush
wear. The other danger is that the loose emery particles go and hide in the
windings, only to come loose later and find their way to the bearings or
bushes where they create damage. I was taught that the only thing to use on
the comm is good quality 400 grit or finer waterpaper. The polishing is then
followed by a good blow down with compressed air. Make sure to also remove
the fine layer of copper dust in the undercuts or you may have a short
circuit on your hands. I usually do the skim and polish first and then
undercut, to eliminate the risk of sector shorts. My local autosparky
prefers to wash the whole lot in electrical cleaner.
