We were taught to use Crocus paper on the communtator and the
tool used to machine it had to be ground a particular way to "cut"
the copper away not "chip" it...

On the weekend I ground the tool I used to an acute angle and it seemed
to cut just fine, I didn't have any crocus paper but used 400 grit paper
that
panel beaters use for rubbing paint...."the black stuff"...worked OK....
