Hello Mark,

I rebuilt my '57 transmission completely and I installed the series 1 clutch
withdrawal mechanism on the early 2 bellhousing. Itcame with holes on both
sides for the withdrawal shaft. Mine happens to be LHD. The early series 2
bellhousing for the 2.25 shares the same smaller layshaft bearing as the
late series 1 housing. To simplify, a late 1 housing and early 2 housing
are interchangable, depending on which engine you want.
I retained the simplicity of a manual clutch release mechanism and only
needed to change a bellhousing. I could do this performing the rebuild and
installed my original clutch release mechanism as normal. To install the
series 1 release on a series2 transmission on its own is more difficult.
The layshaft is hard to line up along with the front bearing, spacers, etc.
It can be done, but it is difficult.
My wiring is made by myself and is still in the preliminary stages. I will
finish the underhood wiring once my engine is installed.
For what years an early series 2 bellhousing has the smaller layshaft, I am
not sure. I was fortunate enough to know a generous series Guru to help me
out and supply me with parts to make the swap.
