AW: AW: SER1 Differential rebuild

Hi George,
as I will only change the bearings and not replace pinion and crownwheel,
they do not need to be repositioned. In any case I will measure the
bearings' length (normally they are 0 to -15 micrometer or so). I believe
that all the present shim constellation can be used as it is.
I will let you know how it progresses.
Cheers, Ulrico

Hi Ulrico,
I don't have any direct experience building diffs, but I've had thirty years
listening to chaps who do and I can tell you that if you want to maximize
life and minimize noise it's a tricky business even for those who do it
regularly -- it's considered an art.
I can also tell you that tapered bearings don't survive with no preload,
although I don't have the shop manual handy so I can't tell you how much
interference you want with new bearings.
Good luck!
