Hi Allan,
I haven't taken them apart yet, this will be the "gourmet special" for the
coming weekend.
After having downed the manual and a general mechanics book I have, I agree
with you and George that the pinion will most likely have to be
repositioned, even when only changing bearings.
As I have none of the gauges described I will use the method of checking the
marks left on the teeth when applying engineer's blue. I will not separate
crown wheel and diff housing, so run out should stay the same.
A trial assembly with new bearings should get bearing pre load right and
then, hopefully, the marks of the teeth will be at the right spot and no
further repositioning will be necessary. I have been told that spacer shims
are available at any bearing supplier. Hope the bearings are not imperial
without a metric counterpart, this will make sourcing somewhat lengthy.
Overall progress of the project is ok, the chassis is done (sand blasted,
zinc coated and painted) and awaits being picked up. To have something on
wheels by the year end should be within reach. We have to move house next
year, so this is keeping some pressure on it all. Wouldn't like to move a
load of components carefully placed in the garage. This systematic, well
thought through way of storing just wasn't designed to be moved...
Cheers, Ulrico

Wrong Ulrico,
They will require repositioning, apart from anything else, is the
preload on the pionion bearings correct now?
Cheers
