Lyndon,
Yes I bought and restored one from scratch and had only ever played with the Dinky version as a kid. A friend said they were easy to work on and I believed him. It has been an experience with a near vertical learning curve but the folks on this list are very helpful and many of the suppliers like Dunsfold also help point you in the right direction.

Hey folks,
I'm based in Northern Ireland and am currently rebuilding a 1957 88"
Series1 2 Litre Diesel. Anyone else with a 2Litre diesel, drop me a
line sometime.
Next on the cards for a bit of TLC (when the paying job permits) is
a1974 S3 109" (Diesel) with a hydrovane compressor running off the PTO &
hydraulic pump driven off the crank shaft and feeding 2 spool valves:
definitely a real maid of all work.
The little gem of the pack is my May 1949 80". I have only been able to
trace one earlier 80" sold new in Northern Ireland. It has been under
cover since at least 1970: it has never had any chassis repairs nor does
it need any! Just goes to show that they used better steel way back
then.... The tin worm has been munching at the top of the bulkhead but
it should be a relatively) straightforward repair.
Last but not least, I have 2 86" LRs both of which have period
conversions in the form of Perkins 4.203 engines. Both are in storage
at present with one running but in dire need of a new bulkhead while the
other is imitating a life-size jigsaw puzzle familiar to many land rover
owners...
Strangely, not one of my land rovers is currently on the road! Hopefully
that position will change soon as I am currently spraying all the 88"
panels ready for reassembly.
On another note, is there anyone else out there who can say they bought
and started to restore a S1 without ever having driven a LR of any
description??
