Mark/Bob B,
Those articles are really good guidance for rebuilding the swivel
housings I have kept most of the articles from that series for future
reference. When you first take the housings apart, take note of the
number of shims that are already on each housing - it can be a fair
indicator of how many will be needed in the rebuilt housing although the
articles you mention show a nice way of guestimating the number of shims
needed by pushing the swivel pin in by hand and seeing how many shims
you can slide under the edge of it. Keep the old shims to one side for
later use and get hold of a spring balance to set the pre load.
I hate to admit it, but my problem with the camber was that I put the
housing back on upside down! It REALLY exaggerates the camber on the
wheel!! Never having rebuilt LR swivels before this really only became
apparent when I put a wheel back on! Try it sometime if you want a
laugh ;o) At least you only make these sorts of mistakes once.... The
best of it is that I had both the Workshop Manual, Parts Book and a
couple of magazine articles to hand when I did this. Might be an idea
to mark the top of the housing before you take it apart: another idea
would be to work on one housing at a time and leave the other as a
reference. If you have access to a digital camera, take a few pics for
reference as you go along.
On another note, some folk seem to have an aversion to the same
questions being asked time and again on the forum: I agree that the
suggested work to codify FAQs will be great and help to reduce the
number of repeat questions and yes the Parts Books and Workshop Manuals
do help but they are not always clear: the Service Bulletins prove that.
Unlike some of us, not everyone gets brought up with oily spanners as
their play toys and if you are in doubt about something to do with your
rebuild, sometimes all the manuals in the world won't help: a word of
advice from someone with a bit of practical experience helps in more
than one way: in mind of that folks, ease up on those who ask questions
that have been presented to the 'list' before now.
