Jon,

I think the really important bit is to have the correct viscosity of
oil.  I have seen a few advertisements for additives to put into the oil
of vehicles that are to be laid up for a period of time: at a guess they
cut down on condensation etc. within the engine.  Like everyone else I
keep coming across stories of land-rovers and old tractors being pulled
out of their hedgerow resting places and with fresh fuel and very little
effort start running after 30 -40 year lay-ups.  When I think of these
stories I guess basic mineral oils protect engines well enough.  There
is also an argument that there are very few 'bad' oils on the market -
no-one would buy them!
My S1 " Litre Diesel sat unused and unmoved between 1987 and August 2001
when I bought it: I spent three days stripping the panels, axles and
bulkhead off it and then with the help of my father, my uncle and some
fresh diesel, started the engine with no problems. When the engine was
dismantled the original oil had protected all the components.
