Are you talking about the chrome swivels or the cast steel housing that
mounts onto the stub axle and brake backing plate?

The answers to each are similar.

If you mean the chrome swivel balls, and are fitting them to an 80" with the
original tracta joints (not the later universal joint type) the external
dimensions of the chrome swivel balls on series Land Rovers are all the
same. The functional differences between the swivel balls on the 80" and
the later ones are that there is more metal in those on the 80". So you can
retro-fit any swivel ball right up to series 3 onto an 80". You can't fit
an original swivel ball from an 80" to a later vehicle.

In regard to the swivel housing.
* It is possible to use a swivel housing from a later series vehicle on an
80" but there are some cautions. The housings on the series 2's are almost
the same as the S1's including the 80" with the addition of a drain plug
adjacent to the oil seal. However on your 80" there is a yellow metal bush
on the inside of the stub axle which is required for your tracta joints, so
if it's not there you need to use your original stub axles.
* If you want to use series 2a or 3 housings you will find that the
steering levers are on the opposite side (bottom instead of top) and the
studs are 7/16" where yours are 5/16" (from memory) so your levers and
brackets won't fit. (These type of housings are much more durable than the
early 5/16" stud type.) Your options are to use the later steering levers
and brackets, therefore reversing they're sides or drill out your original
levers. A word of caution however this reduces the amount of metal around
the studs marginally, but it is a regular fix in Australia and I have not
seen any failures in this modification, in over 30 years of Land Rovering.
The Land Rover Series 2 Workshop Manual also cautions about using different
levers from side to side, so either both top or both bottom.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Diana

Does anyone know where I can acquire a pair of new or good condition swivel
pin housings P/N 217282 for my 1951 S1 80 (LHD North American spec)? Mine
may need polishing and rechroming which in my area is very expensive. My S1
still has the cone bearing and seat for the swivel pin and tracta joints.

Alternately could I switch to the cone bearings and the swivel pin housing
from a later model such as a SII or early SIIA? Would the tracta joint still
fit?

I appreciate any help because I have to decide soon to keep the restoration
going.
