Chipping in from the outside:  I agree with Yuval that the PK object should 
stringify to the value in the DB.  However, I don't think CDBI's id() 
should force that stringification -- if there's a has_a involving the 
column, then there's probably a reason its value is an object.  (Ideally, 
I'd think the
DBD is the right place for stringification, but if that's impractical, 
perhaps DBIx:CF is the right place to force this.)

Agreed.

I agree that's a real need, but I think flattening everything in id() is 
overkill.  The DBI is probably off the hook here, though - if it gets a 
single string for the PK, it's only because something at CDBI level or 
above forced the stringification early.
