Mark,

I have to eat my words! - and so soon too. 

I recently acquired what I think must be the earliest Land-Rover sales
leaflet ever. It shows a centre steer prototype in all the illustrations.
Over one illustration of the centre steer prototype is written "The
Land-Rover is a fast economical vehicle. It is supplied with Left or Right
hand steering as required"!

The illustrations in the leaflet show a Rover engine and gearbox with a Jeep
transfer box fitted on the back. The chassis in the illustrations is that of
a Jeep. The axles are Jeep. 

The Rear PTO is shown but there is also an artists impression of a front
winch - Jeep capstan type - mounted in a valence which is shown on all views
between the bumper and cross-member No 2. (This valence was never fitted as
far as I know to any production 80"). Over this illustration is written "A
power-driven winch of the capstan type can be mounted at the front of the
Land-Rover. The winch can be applied to countless jobs from moving heavy
machines at the factory to grubbing out old tree roots on the farm." 

The rear PTO is listed as an optional extra but the front winch is not.
