Hi Iain,
Well, I went and collected the hardtop today, in the Transit without a
heater ! Fortunately it was quite mild so didn't need it anyway, wore thick socks
& boots plus a thermal vest so was fine. Actually I would probably have
survived in a topless Series 1 but it was quite wet initially.
Good job I had the boots on as the yard was very muddy as you know, however
everyone was very helpful and we laid the top on its back on some pallets so
that I could remove the sides, which came off very easily in a few minutes.
The top section then just fitted in the van with about 4" to spare lengthwise
and then had to rest at a slight angle / so that it fitted crossways too.
The top's in quite good condition but does need a good clean and repaint.
Lots of flaky paint which will probably be best removed with Nitromors. The
alpine lights are in fact glass, however they are both present and correct (the
other one was just lying inside the inverted top).
Unfortunately they couldn't find the rear door although they definitely had
it at one time, nevertheless this is not an insuperable problem, as a front
door can be used and adapted.
I had it in mind to call for a coffee, however firstly I was much later
arriving due to a) an accident on the M56 causing 1/2 hour delay and b) going
wrong around Manchester. Some day I will discover how to access the M60
eastbound from the M56, the signposting is non-existent and the roads don't seem to
concur with my map at all ! Secondly I didn't bring your phone no. (even if I
had it in the first place), although it occurred to me later that Andrew
probably would have it.
The run back was far better, taking 2 1/4 hours which was about an hour less
than going.
Hope your move goes well - what has prompted it ?
Cheers and many thanks for the initial posting re the top,
Anthony
