I agree with you about the bits being susceptible to foreign object =
damage.

There is however another issue which needs to be considered before =
fitting guards, but it probably doesn't affect Germany. In regions like =
Australia and South Africa where there are large areas of savannah =
grasses the shields themselves become problems. What happens is that =
while travelling the grass gets caught up under the guards, dries out =
and heats up with engine and exhaust temps. This heated grass matting =
frequently gets to ignition temp and the vehicle burns.

Over the years, many of the Japanese makes of 4x4 have had guards in =
various places the Mitsubishi and Nissan in particular. To prevent this =
loss of the vehicle many dealers and owners remove the guards before =
delivery.

The series 2 and later vehicles solved the problem by moving the pedals =
and switches.=20

Hello List,

I=B4m not very happy with the fact, that the steering column/pedals with =
shafts/springs and the brake light switch is very open for =
mud/stonesweping/wood etc.
Has someone tried to build a protection shield, maybe like a particular =
inner wing, metal or rubber and can post me his thoughts, construction =
or pics ?

Uli
