    G'Day Brett,
Are we not forgetting the origins of these early Land Rovers. They
were designed as a simple, relatively cheap to build and easy to service
"farmer's friend". the British Army tried the full on bells and whistles
approach with the Austin Champ and ended up with an overweight, very
expensive to build and next to impossible to service 1/4 ton
replacement? for the Land Rover.
Personally, I have never had a problem with either the steering
column, pedals and their shafts or the brake light switch that was
caused by their relative exposure to mud and dirt etc.
As an interesting asside, I was reading the blerb on the new
Discovery in the motoring pages the other day and the unladen weight was
quoted at 2700 Kg. I then checked the manual for my 200 TDi and the kerb
weight was noted as 2080 Kg. and gross laden weight is 2700 Kg. The
addition of extra little bits and pieces and trinkets has added nearly
700 Kg. to the vehicle's weight and no doubt made it much harder to
access and service things. My 1985 Range Rover only weighed 1800 Kg.
Moral of the story? If you want a "perfect" four wheel drive with
all of the bases covered, buy and restore a Champ or a Unimog. Although
early Unimogs also fit into the utilitarian category.
    Cheers
    Allan
