G'Day Mathew,
Having owned and driven a 200tdi powered Discovery for a couple of
years now (it replaced a thirsty and fairly tired, with just over
500,000 Kms. on it 1985 Range Rover) I am more than happy with its
performance. It has dragged Series I wrecks and bits and pieces all over
NSW and I regularly (once every week lately) do longish on road trips.
I have thought that a 200 or 300 tdi would be a good donk in a Range
Rover. not sure about the mechanical differences between the two
engines. The 300 is reportedly a little quieter and has a small increase
in power.
Have found the 200tdi to be very reliable (as long as the timing
belt is replaced religously at 100,000 Km. intervals). It has been
returning between 9 and 10 litres/100 Km. (26 mpUSg). I am not noted for
hanging about and a lot of that would include running at around 125Kmh.,
which seems to be about where it is most comfortable and producing
maximum tourge/power etc.. It is not unduly noisy at these speeds.
The conversion that you have in mind may be the way to go for my
next car too as lowish mileage Range Rovers can be obtained quite
cheaply and use of the earlier diesels means no computers involved. Not
that I am anti computer, but the combination of dust, water, vibration,
heat etc. seems to eventually get them, plus they have an inbuilt
obselescence in that they cannot readily be repaired and new ones for
older vehicles seem to be unobtainable.
Cheers
