It is a lovely idea: i detest the school run barges that Land Rover
build now. They've travelled from elegant simplicity to the worst
kind of bloated excess. No car should weigh nearly 3 tons.

I'd love to see a stripped-down workhorse that does what's needed and
nothing else, but if they just modernise the series one for the
benefit of sentimentalists like me it would be a redundant nostalgia
project. If they want to recapture the spirit of the original land
rover they should build something brand new, utterly simple and
suddenly, startlingly useful.

Some of the original requirements would still apply - it should be
mendable by its users, able to run on almost anything and to travel
across almost anything - but they should start with what's possible
now and - for once! - aim for bold simplicity instead of bloody
satnav-and-leather.

How about a fuel-cell 4x4 with biodiesel generator capacity, a motor
in each big hub, an electric PTO and a modular upper that can accept
anything from a flatbed to a 7 seater? give it two little round
headlamps and that implacable-puppy demeanor we enjoy so much and
you've got a winner.

i'd buy one, anyway.

best

will
