The external slave cylinder is typical of series II/IIA clutch
mechanisms.
The principal differences between the Series II/IIA and Series I
transmissions are the bell housing with the bolt pattern for a 2.25
liter engine and the omission of a dip stick. I believe the boss is
still there and theoretically you could drill the hole and fit a dip
stick. Your transmission should have a suffix "A" after the serial
number on the top of the case. For suffix "A", the internals behind the
bell housing are identical, and you could put on a series I bell housing
on it. If you do change bell housings however, make sure the end float
on the layshaft is sufficient. There are different spacers that go on
the front end. With Suffix "B" transmissions, the front layshaft
bearing got bigger, so you could no longer substitute bell housings.
However, the 6 cylinder bell housing uses the larger layshaft bearing,
and works for suffix "B" boxes on. From "B" on, they also staked the
cap shut on top of the transmission, so yes, the "A" boxes had removable
filler caps on top.

Subject: SER1 S2 gearbox
Hi All,
I have just acquired what I was told was a Series Two gearbox (it was a
freebie) but it is unusual in that it has the Series One style filler
cap - the removable lid held down with a spring clip, but does not have
the dip stick, and it has the hydraulic clutch fittings still attached.
I have not got a number from it yet, but just wondered if anyone could
shed any light on it. Obviously a picture would be easier, but the major
will not allow that. Did the early Series Two gearboxes have this method
of filling them with oil, or is it possible it is a lash up with various
bits of gearbox?
Cheers
