When you talk about popping up the plate, Are you talking about the side =
rocker cover or the plates into the water jacket on the block?
The Series 1's after 1949 all had round core plugs (that I know as welsh =
plugs) in the RHS of the block under the manifold. However the 1948 =
engines had 2 large oval plates which were screwed into the block with a =
gasket. It is these oval plates that I know as the "side plates".
