Looks just like a core plug to me! You live and learn. I'd guess 
the term core plug comes from the casting process where the 
inner part of the mould (which with a cylinder block casting 
leaves the water passages when cleared out) is known as the 
core.

Diana; as regards a literal Welsh plug, how about Wales for the 
Grand Slam again?
