My view is that anyone who is using Class::DBI directly should know what
to do, by virtue of it being documented. Anyone who is not using
Class::DBI explicitly (e.g. users of Maypole, Catalyst, etc) should be
able to rely on the framework author (who falls into the 'using
Class::DBI directly' part above) having DTRT on their behalf.

I disagree. Class::DBI and Ima::DBI shouldn't need to know about their
environment. Yes, a lot of people today use mod_perl. Who knows what's
going to happen in a few years. We're already seeing confusion here over
Apache 1 vs Apache 2. I don't want to have to change Ima::DBI or
Class::DBI every time there's a new environment that people want to run
them under.

The 'storm of protests' doesn't carry very much weight with me. Mostly
they seem to be reacting more to a perceived problem that's much more
philosophical, than to the technical problem, which, AIUI is quite a
technical one that doesn't only shows up in circumstances that most
users don't every encounter.

As I've said, however, this isn't a problem that's bitten me, and I
haven't really understand it all, so I may well have picked things up 
incorrectly.
