I think we could come at this from another perspective.

Ima::DBI is caching the handle.

Caching is good when it works *and is transparent*.

In this case, there are times when it's not transparent, and that
breaks things.

Thus, at a minimum, Ima::DBI needs a published hook so that *someone*
can say "please don't cache this", and this has to be *in* the distro
for Ima::DBI.  Thus, Tony doesn't have to go figure out every place
where the caching breaks, because $person_in_the_field can simply
disable the caching because the hook is there.

Ideally, Ima::DBI *could* be taught when not to cache, but this will
require a lot of good patches to come into Tony's inbox, many of which
Tony will not be able to test.

So, can we agree that the fix is somewhere between these two endpoints?
