Assuming that changes in design usually result in a technical improvement or
a cost reduction in manufacture, the badge change was probably  done to save
a few pennies by replacing zinc die cast with stamped aluminium (despite the
close proximity to GW I prefer the "proper" spelling)
With that in mind the mixing of badges makes no sense. But Land Rover has
been known to mix and match, esecially in the early years.

Getting closer to understanding what I need.

I don't know if it has any bearing on the truth but a recent auction on eBay
had two badges one in the small cast the other the Birmingham stamped
aluminium type.  The seller was not a LR parts dealer so I assumed they may
come off the one vehicle.

The facts will out.
