<DIV></DIV>&gt;Hello Uli
<DIV></DIV>&gt;I have seen this sort of thing before( the dimple) They are caused by
<DIV></DIV>&gt;sheared off bolt heads from the diff carrier. What happens is, over time,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;the 10 or so bolts that hold the crown wheel to the differential carrier
<DIV></DIV>&gt;come loose and eventually breal off. the pieces then get picked up by the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;spinning crown wheel and dent or puncture the axle casing.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Or worse, damage the differential by breaking off teeth( that could be the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;clicking noise)
<DIV></DIV>&gt;It would definately be a good idea to open and inspect the differential
<DIV></DIV>&gt;because one sheared bolt means more to follow.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp; If the noise is coming from the dimple try putting a big screwdriver or
<DIV></DIV>&gt;other metal shaft on the outside of the dimple and put the other end of the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;shaft in your ear. If the noise is louder there than anywhere else on the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;housing then it's a good chance that, that is where the noise is coming
<DIV></DIV>&gt;from. and try it on other parts of the axle. You could also work out the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;gearing and count how many clicks you get in one rotation of the wheels this
<DIV></DIV>&gt;should also give you a clue as to where the noise is coming from.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hello All,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; S1 86" 1955, rear axle, completely restored in nearly as new condition.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;No oil filled in, no brakedrums fitted.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I have a noise, when turning the wheels. It´s a light metalic
<DIV></DIV>&gt;clickclickclick which sounds like a missing roll in a bearing, but
<DIV></DIV>&gt;everything is okay or new. Is that only why there is no oil in the diff/axle
<DIV></DIV>&gt;and that could be the clickclick from turning with the dry halfshafts the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;dry 3 gearwheels in the diff ?
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I have also a small but ca. 3 mm deep dimple in the back of the diff
<DIV></DIV>&gt;housing. Is it possible, that the teeth of the large planetary wheel
<DIV></DIV>&gt;scratches against the innerside and make that noise ? How much
<DIV></DIV>&gt;space/distance is between the large planetary wheel and the housingwall ?
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I´m not very amused about a second opening of the whole axle, both
<DIV></DIV>&gt;halfshafts out, diff out for seeing nothing, brcause evrything is finished
<DIV></DIV>&gt;in black paint.
