As I understand Uli's original email, this dimple is 'concave' in that
it goes into the casing, and is not sticking up proud of the casing. I
have seem some pretty battered axle cases in my time, so I would very
much doubt that the gears inside are touching the casing for such a
small dimple or dent.
I remember reading that new gears need to 'bed' in so to speak, so
maybe overtime the sound will reduce as the teeth wear in to each other.
It may be worth filling the axle with ep90 or equivalent and seeing if
the noise is still there.........

Hello Uli
I have seen this sort of thing before( the dimple) They are caused by
sheared off bolt heads from the diff carrier. What happens is, over
time,
the 10 or so bolts that hold the crown wheel to the differential
carrier
come loose and eventually breal off. the pieces then get picked up by
the
spinning crown wheel and dent or puncture the axle casing.
Or worse, damage the differential by breaking off teeth( that could be
the
clicking noise)
It would definately be a good idea to open and inspect the
differential
because one sheared bolt means more to follow.

If the noise is coming from the dimple try putting a big screwdriver
or
other metal shaft on the outside of the dimple and put the other end of
the
shaft in your ear. If the noise is louder there than anywhere else on
the
housing then it's a good chance that, that is where the noise is
coming
from. and try it on other parts of the axle. You could also work out
the
gearing and count how many clicks you get in one rotation of the wheels
this
should also give you a clue as to where the noise is coming from.

Hello All,
S1 86" 1955, rear axle, completely restored in nearly as new
condition.
No oil filled in, no brakedrums fitted.
I have a noise, when turning the wheels. It s a light metalic
clickclickclick which sounds like a missing roll in a bearing, but
everything is okay or new. Is that only why there is no oil in the
diff/axle
and that could be the clickclick from turning with the dry halfshafts
the
dry 3 gearwheels in the diff ?
I have also a small but ca. 3 mm deep dimple in the back of the
diff
housing. Is it possible, that the teeth of the large planetary wheel
scratches against the innerside and make that noise ? How much
space/distance is between the large planetary wheel and the housingwall
?
I m not very amused about a second opening of the whole axle,
both
halfshafts out, diff out for seeing nothing, brcause evrything is
finished
in black paint.
