Graham,

This was done by a mate in the UK, on my old 86. I threw in the tank when I
sold him the L/R, it came to me with a whole pile of other spares.
Tanks are the same size but lack the cruciform pressing on the side panel,
also the filler is significantly different. Lightweight tank had a narrow
extended neck.
He had to chop part of the top and the filler neck out of the old tank,
then cut a corresponding section out of the L/W tank and weld together.
However

DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS THE TANK HAS BEEN EMPTY FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND IS
FREE OF ALL VAPOUR!

Another possible solution is to degrease the inside of your tank and get
hold of some epoxy resin and suitable filler (coloidal silca works well)
then put a fiillet of resin/ filler over all the seams.

Rgds
