Hi,
Funny, this subject should crop up. My fiance, has just bought a 1954 86"
(what a girl!) on the road, but needing a fair bit of fettling. Anyway,
between doing the deal and collecting it the tank has started seeping from
a seam at the bottom (well it wouldn't seep from a seam at the top would
it!). the tank looks recent, ie: painted in red oxide and very crisp, new
looking. It was supposed to be a repro tank from the club a few years ago.
I read these emails then went to see the vehicle that weekend and lo and
behold it was leaking!!
Looks like there may be a quality issue with these new tanks. (Cant really
comment as we didn't get it new so don't know the history of it, but
coincidence or what).
We'll try the sealant stuff, and then probably end up doing what I did on
my own 86", which was get a Series 2 tank, cut the filler neck off, weld
the hole up, cut a hole in the correct area and fit the Series2 type filler
neck to it with a gasket and 4 screws. Works a treat.
(I am aware of the safety issues of welding petrol tanks of course....!).
