Graham Wood asked if a military Lightweight petrol tank can be substituted
for an original Series 1. (As I've posted before) I've tried this and it
only works after a fashion. The tank is the same width, depth and height,
and so appears to be identical... BUT THE SLOPE OF THE FRONT IS DIFFERENT.
This effectively stops it fitting inside the seat box unless it's dropped
about an inch (25mm). I did this by making tubular spacers to fit over
longer bolts. If I recall, there are then issues at the back end under the
wheelarch - you need to put an aluminium or plastic spacer over a gap,
otherwise the rear wheel flings mud up onto the top of your tank.

I've passed the "Mysterious Wooden Pick-Up" URL onto James Taylor. My guess
would be that it's a vehicle that lost much of its original body many years
ago, and something easier to cobble up locally was fitted to replace it.
That doesn't explain the steel body panels, though - although I have
evidence of one SXF that seems to have had a steel rear tub.
