Bob

My question comes from local knowledge that in NSW the Roads and Traffic =
Authority (MoT equivalent) will not recognise a change of chassis, as =
the chassis and VIN are the same. What they say is that it is a never =
previously registered, therefore a "new vehicle" and must comply with =
Australian Design Rules (ADR's) current on the day of registration. No =
grandfather clause etc. I know this because, years ago I had rot in the =
rear of a Series 2a SW chassis so I swapped everything over to a =
replacement chassis, including the GM 5.2 litre V8. The vehicle was =
presented to the RTA with the Registration Plates attached in current =
registration, same engine number etc. (The RTA maintain ownership of =
Rego Plates and they have to be returned within one month of the vehicle =
being written off or out of Registration.) The RTA said this was a new =
vehicle and didn't comply with ADR so the vehicle was eventually sold =
for parts value.

Now on this list I keep hearing about people getting new replica chassis =
most of which are galvanised.

My question is about those chassis, do they stamp the original chassis =
number on the replacement chassis?

Diana

From what I believe to understand,

The car number can only remain the same as the original.

If anybody can enlighten on this, info would be most welcome.

The VIN is the same as the chassis number.

When you change to a new chassis onto an old set of body components =
what is the model of the vehicle?

Do they re stamp the old number?

Or do you get a new VIN?

Everything is going on to a new chassis and bulkhead, so we will need =
a few new bushes and bolts anyway.
