Jeremy,
You might also check the wee fan motor in the center of the heater to 
make sure it is running.  You don't get a lot of heat but it does just 
take the raw edge off.  I also use a fume curtain to separate the bed 
from the front and it's less volume to heat.  Even in ideal conditions, 
filling your hottie with good warm water and tucking it under you coat 
can't hurt either.
