Diana,

The later cap will not replace the earlier one. The earlier cap is
physically larger. 

The later one comes in several variations with the leads pointing in
different directions and is easily available from many suppliers.

I have the original type as I'm trying to conform as closely to
specification as I can.  (Otherwise it would have a reconditioned 1997 cc
motor I have in the shed from a 1957 vehicle).  From the diagrams in the
catalogues it appears that the correct cap has less detail in the moulding,
straight sides and a very flat domed top with all 5 lead holes coming out
the side.  If the original style isn't easily available and its only the
physical look of the cap that's different, then I could go with the stepped
top cap.  The problem is that I don't know what the actual difference is.
