Wayne,

The 1997cc distributor is either identical or almost identical to the
replacement supplied for the 1600 in later years. The motor will run Ok with
it. The parts are basically interchangeable with all the similar Lucas
distributors fitted to most British cars 1955-1968 ish. Just beware that the
side entry cap for this comes in several varieties which are electrically
interchangeable but which point the leads in different directions.

Diana,
I was "told" that the Series distributors are all interchangeable but 
without a second unit to drop in and try, I can't verify that.  The 
easy thing to do is borrow a Series 2 unit, undo the cinch bolt and see 
if it fits.
