Thanks guys.

Now that I have taken both the series 2a 2280 cc distributor and the
original off the 1595 cc motor to the one in the 1997 cc motor and can see
the difference in size.

Will my plan to build up the later series 1 1997 cc distributor with series
2a parts work and will it fit the 1595cc when finished?

Do you have Phil Avery's contacts?

I agree with Nick, I tried many alternative caps, and to keep that
model distributor it's the original dome shape is the only model that
fits. The base is larger in diameter and the notches that align it are
a unique configuration.  Phil Avery in NZ helped me source a spare, but
they are either used or NOS.  Nothing is currently made for them that I
am aware of.
