G'day Allan and All
The hood I have on long time order is for a 107, but I recently fitted a new
hood which I bought off ebay onto my 88". Although it was delivered to this
bloke from Craddocks in 2002 it had never been unpacked. I can't complain
because it only cost me £75 but it's really a couple of inches too short
down the back. The rear flap just met the top edge of the tailboard. All the
"plastic" ropes supplied are way too short and the "brass" eyelets are quite
rusty. Luckily I have plenty of the correct rope on the shelf. I wish I knew
who made the old hood I removed after 17 faultless years. I only ever
re-proofed it once with that cheap liquid for brickwork and that was 10
years ago.
The only other hood I ever bought was a genuine one, ex-army from Jacksons,
before they sold all their remaining Series One spares to Dunsfold and it
fitted like a glove and everything was brass and proper rope. Don't suppose
they have any left!
The only ones I know of these days are Exmoor, All Wheel Trim and Craddocks.
Occasionally at shows there is some small outfit doing them and you pick up
a business card but when you want one they seem to have gone back to the day
job. I'll just have to keep stretching the Craddocks one between the heavy
rain and sunshine to gain another half inch where it matters.
Cheers
Martin
