Hi Ian
Exactly the same thing happened a few weeks ago to my 1997 Tdi Disco when we
had all the snow. Luckily I was able to coast onto the verge.
I had had difficulty a few weeks previously engaging some gears then all
went completely normal until one day changing up after a roundabout. No
warning or noise, just sudden complete drive loss.
There was some rattling sound if I tried to engage anything, high or low,
bit like a few marbles in a tin, but no movement whatsoever. I feared a
stripped mainshaft which was a feature of earlier Discos than mine before
re-calls.
When I stripped the clutch I found part of the centre of the driven plate
had disintigrated. It was a Valio unit and contained some plastic components
would you believe. There was no damage to the flywheel etc and no other
faults, but I replaced everything with a Borg and Beck Unit and have had no
problem since.
So particularly if you get any rattling sound it's likely to be the clutch
plate.
Hope this might help
Martin
